Clarence “Sternie” Sterns, longtime resident of Jackson Hole and founder of Hungry Jacks General Store in Wilson.
Sternie flew B-17 bomber jets in World War II and completed 21 missions before being shot down by Nazis and later imprisoned for 13 months.
Grateful to have survived imprisonment, the World War II veteran made his way back to Yellowstone National Park in 1946. Working at the general store at Tower Falls, he met his wife, Dodie, whom he is photographed with here.
After Stearns retired, he picked up his passion from World War II and purchased a kit airplane to build. The almost-finished vehicle stayed in a building next to Hungry Jacks (where this portrait was made) before he donated it to the Utah Military Academy.
